Hydroponic Systems
An Introduction To Deep Water Culture Hydroponics
Growing different types of plants at home is very popular. Hydroponics is a great option for growing plants. Deepwater culture systems are a great way to get started with hydroponics. This growing method can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be and can be scaled up as you gain experience.
Many commercial organizations use deep water culture systems to grow a variety of fruit and vegetable crops efficiently and sustainably.
Wick System
The wick system is very similar to the deep water culture (DWC), in that you need the basics, air pump, water reservoir, air stone and, nutrient solution. What is added is another container, ad wick, and some sort of neutral medium.
NFT hydroponics is a method of soil-less cultivation where plant roots are suspended above a stream of continuously flowing nutrient solution that provides them with all the water, nutrients and oxygen they need to sustain rapid, healthy plant growth.
Pots are filled with an inert medium that does not function like soil or contribute nutrition to the plants but which anchors the roots and functions as a temporary reserve for the nutrient solution.
The concept behind ebb and flow hydroponics is that intermittent flooding occurs in timed cycles that allow the growing medium to oxygenate. The plants benefit from this short dry period because allows for a greater intake of oxygen which forces their roots to grow and the more a plant’s root system grows, the better it can absorb nutrients – and the faster and healthier the plant will grow!
Drip system hydroponics is the most popular of all the hydroponic systems. This type of hydroponics borrows the most water-efficient irrigating technique used in traditional cultivation and adapts it to a soil-less growing system that’s so simple, efficient, and versatile that it’s being used to produce bountiful crops by everyone from city dwellers living in small apartments to some of the biggest commercial hydroponic farms the world over.
